AWS: Leading Cloud Elevating Ecosystem

Amazon's Q2 results surpassed expectations, with 10% share jump today, as AWS 🏆 continued its reign as the fastest-growing segment. Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO, underscored the strength of AWS's partner ecosystem, as they now face stronger AI competition from MSFT and Google. Let's dive in.

"AWS remains the clear cloud infrastructure leader with a significant leadership position with respect to number of customers, size of partner ecosystem…” Andy Jassy

Boasting a $88Bn annual run rate, AWS is still far ahead of its competitors, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud, sitting at ~$50bn and $30bn respectively.

📊 Cloud Sector Stabilization

Amazon Web Services (AWS)'s performance points to a stabilization of the tech sector. While AWS's growth slightly decelerated from 16% to 12% QoQ, it outpaced investor expectations of 9-10%.

This suggests the tech storm is behind or at least abating, with most customers moving from cost optimization to innovation.

“Over the last year, AWS customers have needed assistance cost optimizing...we've started seeing more customers shift their focus toward driving innovation and bringing new workloads to the cloud” – Jassy

🤖 AWS's AI Strategy

Without a major AI partnership (like Microsoft <> OpenAI) or Google's AI-first focus, AWS leans on its scale, partner-friendly ecosystem, and open-source approach to AI.

“We think of large language models in generative AI as having three key layers...all of which AWS is investing heavily in” - Jessey

Bottom layer - compute power to train models.

AWS has been developing custom AI chips, Trainium and Inferentia, for training and inference. "We're optimistic that a lot of large language model training and inference will be run on AWS' Trainium and Inferentia chips in the future" - Jassy

Middle layer - large language models (LLMs) as a service. Amazon's Bedrock offers access to LLMs from Anthropic, Stability AI, AI21 Labs, etc.

Top layer - application layer, AWS's weak spot currently but it is working hard to bring AI products like PolyAI, launching Code Whisperer, etc.

💎 Data: A key differentiator in AI

AWS has an edge with customer data.

“People want to bring generative AI models to the data, not the other way around… [AWS] has more customers and data store than anybody else. " - Jassy.

AWS his a lot of customers of its broad array of data storage, management, and analytics services. Now it's paying off.

The AI dominance battle is in early days and AWS is clearly one of contenders.

💡 What AWS growth means for partners and ecosystem

AWS's performance sends an optimistic message to its partners and the tech ecosystem at large.

With continuing growth of AWS and its warchest of ~$120Bn of customer cloud commits, leveraging it’s marketplace is a must, particularly if your product runs on AWS.
